Christmas Counting Book
Programs Used: Kidspiration2-inserted a new picture library of Christmas icons from Microsoft Word
Classroom Connection: Counting, Number Recognition, Reading a Predictable Book
Lesson:
Day 1
Children brainstormed Christmas items. I wrote them on the interactive whiteboard-they helped by supplying beginning and ending sounds.
Next they chose an item and a number1-18 (depending on number of children in the class). I wrote their name/number next to the word.
Day 2
Children opened Kidspiration2. I modeled how to insert a text box and change font, color and size.
Children copied their sentence which was written on a strip of paper for them: I see 1 Santa. (Next year I will type the sentence using all caps. I forgot some children can not identify letters yet. )
Day 3
Modeled how to find Christmas library and insert correct number of pictures. Some children needed to finish writing.
I fixed capitalization/punctuation errors and told individual students how to print.
With one group I put their story on Photostory3. I added some music and had the children read their sentence. I put the finished story on my school webpage and here. (coming soon)
The finished books were bound into a book and given to the classroom teacher to add to the class library. (Next year I will begin earlier and make sure the cover pages are laminated for extra durability. )
